the craziest thing that’s ever happened to me

We were eating at Chili’s this evening with my parents after Jonah was at their house for the day. We were finishing up, when a guy walks by, says, “Merry Christmas” as he drops an envelope in front of me, and walks away. We all looked at each other for a couple seconds, trying to figure out if we knew the guy, or what.

He didn’t look back once, just left the building quickly. I opened the envelope, which said “Merry Christmas” on the outside, and found a Christmas card. You won’t believe what I found when I opened it.

ONE. THOUSAND. DOLLARS.

I don’t even know what else to say. A complete stranger gave us a thousand dollars. We looked around for him and saw him driving away, still not looking back. This guy just wanted to do something nice for someone he didn’t know. And we were so confused about what was happening that we didn’t even get to thank him. I wish I could tell him that, because of his generosity, I can now get an eye exam and a new pair of glasses, which I have needed for months because mine are broken and I keep having to super glue them back together. We can both afford to get the oil changed in our cars, which we had been putting off. And maybe we can do something nice when my brother comes in to town in a couple of days.

We also wanted to do something nice for someone else. We went to both Wal-Mart and the mall looking for an Angel Tree, but I guess it’s too close to Christmas and they’ve already packed everything up and whatnot. That’s okay, it just gives us more time to think of something nice we can do.

Merry Christmas, indeed.
